Senior Digital Forensic Examiner

Longeviti LLC is seeking a Senior Digital Forensic Examiner who is certified in EnCE, GCFE, IACIS, CFCE or other laboratory-approved industry certification to support the DEA in Lorton, VA. Must be U.S. citizen and eligible for Public Trust clearance.


DESCRIPTION
The DEA requires qualified digital forensic examiners to conduct identification, collection, preservation, documentation and analysis of digital evidence. The DEA also requires qualified Discovery staff in support eDiscovery services. The DEA requires the following support staff: program analyst, research and develop engineers, senior system architect, and a senior system administrator. The primary place of work performance is the Digital Evidence Laboratory at 8550 Cinder Bed Road, Suite 500, Lorton, Virginia 22079, but may also include positions permanently located at other DEA facilities.

Perform OSB digital forensics support in accordance with DEA and SFL9 policies and procedures in support of DEA investigations as required. OSB locations may include, but are not restricted to, residences, office buildings, drug manufacturing plants, pharmacies, hospitals, and doctor’s offices. The Government will determine the OSB operations that require support and provide initial OSB coordination.

Support the laboratory’s quality program by performing method validation & verification (review of forensic tools), perform instrument maintenance and testing, assisting with the Proficiency Test Program, assisting with the documentation and review of records in support of laboratory accreditation, performing audits & review of forensic work, assisting with discovery requests, assisting with the maintenance and storage of electronic examination records, and organizing forensic findings to be released to investigators.

Perform digital forensic analysis and research for DEA. In this capacity, examiners shall conduct duties commonly associated with forensic analysis and research in accordance with DEA laboratory policy. In situations where laboratory policy does not exist or is not clear, the examiner shall rely on industry best practices. The contractor will need to develop the expertise to extract evidence from a variety of data sources, to include proprietary pharmaceutical databases. The forensic examiner is expected to apply research in order to solve unique analytical challenges.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 
  • The Senior Forensic Examiner duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
    • Assisting with seizure of digital evidence from on-site search locations while minimizing possible data loss.
    • Preserving and archiving digital evidence using forensic best practices.
    • Maintaining proper chain of custody of evidence and associated documentation.
    • Interfacing with investigators and developing analysis plan to meet customer needs.
    • Utilizing authorized forensic tools to perform forensic imaging and extraction from digital media.
    • Maintaining operational effectiveness of all assigned Government hardware, software, and forensic support equipment.
    • Writing clear reports that accurately present forensic findings and detailed notes to ensure those results are repeatable.
    • Testifying in court, Grand Jury, or other legal proceedings through testimony, sworn affidavits, or other legal instruments.
    •  Successfully passing competency and annual proficiency tests in Digital Forensics as determined by SFL9.
    • Providing guidance and training on emerging technology and new techniques to forensic personnel as needed.
    • Performing method validation/verification (review of forensic tools)
    • Performing instrument maintenance and testing
    • Assisting with the Proficiency Test Program
    • Assisting with accreditation support
    • Performing audits / review of forensic work
    • Assisting with discovery requests
    • Assisting with consolidation of electronic records of forensic analysis for filing (Case Closure)
    • Organizing laboratory records and data for delivery to laboratory customers
    •  Performing other laboratory forensic functions as assigned. On-Site Backups (OSB)
    • Requires ability to travel with limited advance notice of 1-2 days. OSB travel typically consists of 2 nights/3 days, with days 1 and 3 identified as travel days. The contracted examiner must be able to adjust immediately to unexpected changes. OSB operations normally take place during the workweek (i.e. Monday through Friday); however, occasional weekend (i.e. Saturday and Sunday) work may be required.
    • OSB operations frequently exceed a typical eight-hour day and it is required that the contracted examiner remain on-site as long as is necessary to complete the operation.
    • During an OSB, work schedules will adjust due to operational needs.
    • Provide on-site digital forensics technical support for DEA operations.
    • Identify and provide assistance and guidance for search and seizure of computer systems, handheld devices, and digital storage media.
    • Follow laboratory policies and procedures for OSB operations.
 
  • Laboratory Analysis and Database Extractions
    • Interfacing with an investigator and developing analysis plan to address questions of investigative relevance.
    • Performing forensic analysis, to include, but not limited to:
      • Recovering deleted files and other system artifacts.
      • Decrypting password protected data files and devices.
      •  Performing forensic keyword searches and producing results.
      • Analyzing and interpreting various data to provide technically accurate forensic results and reports.
      • Querying, extracting, and reporting data from relational databases found on suspect media while maintaining data integrity.
      • Recovering and restoring proprietary pharmaceutical databases, to include from flat files or backups.
    • Writing clear and concise technical reports and notes detailing work.
    • Conducting research and development to identify evidentially significant artifacts from emerging hardware and software technologies.
    • Conducting research and development to identify new methods of forensic data extraction and preservation.
    •  Conducting validation of tools and techniques.
    • Providing guidance and training on emerging technology and new techniques to forensic personnel as needed.
    • Participating and representing the laboratory in professional organizations and working groups as required.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, COMPETENCIES:
  • Minimum seven (7) years of experience in Digital Forensics
  • Certification in EnCE, GCFE, IACIS, CFCE or other laboratory-approved industry certification
  • Pass a DEA lab skills test
CERTIFICATIONS OR TRAINING REQUIRED:
  • Candidates must possess a laboratory-approved industry certification in digital forensics from an accredited organization, (e.g., EnCE, GCFE, IACIS CFCE).
SECURITY CLEARANCE:
  • Public Trust through DoJ
EDUCATION:
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 24 credit hours in computer science, engineering or mathematics
